My First Street Photography Zine: “Overtime”

It was exactly five years ago at the beginning of June in 2019 that I purchased my first two street photography zines: Too Much Freedom by Angelo Partemi and People Are Still Strange by Troy Holden. Fantastic work, both pieces, which I’ve revisited more times that I can count over the years.

Those zines laid the blueprint for what I consider the ideal format for a street photography zine: a simple (perhaps poetic) title and date range for context; a landscape orientation with a size about 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches; and photos full or nearly-full bleed paired together across 40 – 70 pages. Like stepping into a roller coaster, you can take the ride from front to back cover in under 10 minutes — and if it’s done well, experience a thrill.

Workin’ Overtime in May

339,698 steps in 31 days in May to make 80 photos to create my first zine

From that inspiration, I’m excited to share my first zine Overtime #01. It features 80 photos shot in Chicago during the month of May (I did indeed put in overtime). To start, I’ve published it digitally, trying my best to approximate the aforementioned blueprint.

Please keep your hands and feet in the vehicle at all times and let me know if you feel any ups or downs. All I can say, more than ever, is that it’s been a thrill to hit the street camera in hand as Chicago hits the throttle for summer.

Diggin this CP! Real nice use of the landscape zine format and incorporating playful triptychs with the side by side portraits alongside landscape. Will def keep this in mind. Also May was a good month. Congrats!!!
