I’m happy to share I was included as a finalist in this year’s LensCulture Street Photography Awards announced on Thursday. There were 6 winners, 8 juror’s picks and 25 finalists for the international competition representing 21 countries, with entries coming from 148 countries.
It’s an honor to be included among such wonderful work from talented photographers around the world. Congrats to all the winners!
As part of the awards, each of the 8 jury members selected one photographer to be awarded special distinction. My 10-photo series “On Closer Inspection” was chosen as a juror’s pick by Johanna Neurath, Art Director at the book publisher Thames & Hudson. Unique to these picks, brief quotes explaining what they appreciated about the photographers and their work were included.

Johanna’s commentary on my series:
“I was drawn to this series because so many of the pictures simply tickled my fancy. They show the kinds of things I’d also register and want to capture for myself. They zero in on an eclectic mix of street moments, recording the bizarre, the everyday but slightly absurd urban, human moments that many might overlook. I also like the visual consistency—how the distance from the subject (not too close and not too long) and the color palette ties everything together into a visually cohesive series.”
A big thank you to Johanna for the recognition! It’s only the second time I’ve gotten an award from a competition, this one with exponentially more pedigree and reach than the prior one in 2019. As much I would have liked to be a winner (and claim some of the attendant prize money), it meant more to me to receive the write-up from an industry veteran and expert like Johanna, who’s also a photographer herself — and furthermore, hear that my pictures tickled her fancy.
After a year’s worth of work back on the streets of Chicago almost every day since a 4-year hiatus, there’s no better compliment.
