Let There Be House (On the Lakefront)

Born in Chicago, I wasn’t. But since moving to the city 18 years ago, house music — born in the city at The Warehouse (from which it got its name) in the late 70s and early 80s and now grown into a global phenomenon — has been the soundtrack to most of my fun here, whether at a club, house party, or in my headphones making pictures. It’s music made to move your body, whatever you’re doing. Oontz oontz!

So of course I was game to join fellow photographers Amado and Nina at a Viva Acid party on the lakefront on a sunny Sunday to enjoy classic house tracks and snap some candid photos while we danced.

The vibe was friendly and the sound system was strong — and, as usual, capturing Chicagoans in action was the best part. I’ve always carried my Coolpix on my hip to whatever party I’ve attended, ready for a moment or portrait; this was particularly fun, though, being outdoors in great natural light with pockets of people spread out enjoying the show. House music and candid photography, a match made in oontz oontz heaven. Viva acid!

  1. The peaceful lakeside atmosphere shines through in these photos. Thoughtful image editing can enhance the reflections and soft light, giving the scene greater depth and serenity.
